Riding Conditions in Puerto Progreso, Mexico
Riding Conditions
Wind and Weather Conditions
The weather is quite warm most of the year (25-35 C°); when at the coldest (during 'Nortes') you will be very comfortable with a short wetsuit (15-25 C°). At times of the year, the water can be very warm, and the air temps can reach 40 Celcius. But if the breeze is blowing, it will be perfectly bearable. The sun is quite strong, it is recommended to use sunscreen and maybe sunglasses.
Recommended wind for kitesurfing is wind coming from N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, WNW, NW and NNW .
There is Thermal, Frontal and Trade wind at Puerto Progreso, Mexico.
The wind is good almost all year round, except for september, which is the lowest wind season, and sometimes when there is Red Tide. The rest of the year, this is a very reliable spot. The most reliable months for wind are from February to June. The coast faces North perfectly, if you are facing the ocean, it stretch's left towards the west and east towards the right. Wind is quite strong and constant if coming from Northeast, the prevalent, trade wind direction. Wind varies from 8-35 knots from this direction. Wind can also be southwest in the mornings which is side off, this is normally before the thermal (north east) kicks in around 12-2 p.m. When pressure systems come from the north, the wind can come from Northwest to North, to NNE. This wind is quite onshore, usually very strong, and often gusty. At times, the Northeaster will not kick in and the wind will stay from the Southeast, and stay offshore, this winds is usually very warm and gusty, because it comes from the land (you can go to Ria de Chelem to kite). Kitesurfing is possible with a rescue boat (with offshore wind), but not recommended.
Wind usually blows from NE and ENE, E on the spot.
The best moments to come to Puerto Progreso, Mexico are January, February, March, April, May, June, July, November and December .

Beach and Tide Conditions
Kitesurfing conditions do not depend on Tide on this spot.
Puerto Progreso, Mexico is a Shallow, Flat, Chop and Small waves spot.
The launching/landing area is reported to be of Medium size.
The best beach for kiting is known as 'El Play-on'. It is about 3-4 kms to the west from the Cargo Pier; there is plenty space for launching and also you may find always kiters that can help you with assistance. It is a very wide open sandy beach, with a little bit of shells at places, not very big though.
The wind is very consistent and clean far from the Pier ((3-4 kms to the west) at El Play-on, but not near the Pier in the area known as Malecon Internacional, because the very long mole creates a wind shadow so whirlpools (updrafts and downdrafts) are common in that area. The water is not very deep, 10 meters deep 4 kilometers out to sea. You can walk out about 100 meters till water gets to your neck. Very little shore break, no waves (just with North Fronts), wind chop can get heavy when wind blows above 20 knots. The chop will come from the northeast, when the trade winds are blowing from that same direction (most prevalent wind). When there is a high pressure system from the north ('Norte winds'), the waves can get a bit bigger, but not very big at all, maybe 1.5-2 mts high. At this time they come from the North or Northwest. The water can be a bit brown in 'Norte' season because the high winds and chop churn up the sand from the ocean floor. This is mostly from November to early March. Sometimes there can be a little bit of 'Sargasso' sea weed, but just by the shore, nevertheless, closest to the Pier at "El Malecón Internacional" the more seaweed you will find on the shore and water, because of the current created by the Pier. The rest of the year the water is a nice light blueish green color. When the wind is side offshore (Southeast winds, frequent in the mornings), the water is flat and you should look for the Ria de Chelem for kiting (don´t kite on the sea side with off shore winds). You should not kite near the Pier in the area known as 'Malecon' neither its extension 'Malecon Internacional', because kiters have been robbed in that area and there are also drunk people wandering around. Better go to 'El Playon', about 3-4 kms to the west from the Pier, following the same sand road that comes from Progreso. There is a kitesurf community that gets there everyday.
